What is acne (pimples /zits)?

Acne, a very common skin problem that shows up as outbreaks of bumps on the skin.Although acne is more common in adolescence, about 20% of all cases occur in adults. Acne commonly starts during puberty between the ages of 10 and 13.Acne lesions are most common on the face, but they can also occur on the neck, chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms.

What causes acne?

Acne has many causes and is a disease of the oil-producing glands of the skin called the pilosebaceous glands.Process of acne formation has four main steps involved

2. Blocked pores: Excess oil with dead skin plug the tiny openings for hair follicles (plugged pores) giving rise to white or black heads/ comedones.

3. Infection by bacteria P. Acne.

The cause of acne is not fully understood. Though stress can aggravate acne, it clearly does not cause it. Common acne in teenagers starts with an increase in hormone production. Depending on the type of pill, oral contraceptives may trigger acne in some women but suppress it in others. Acne can be caused by problems like Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) along with unwanted hair growth, hair loss, irregular periods or other changes to your body.Steroids taken by some bodybuilders and other athletes, medications taken for some other medical illness can also lead to severe outbreaks.
